If you live in Slippery Rock and are interested in keeping up with your community, going to Slippery Rock Borough Council meetings can be a great place to start. The council talks about fundraisers, local volunteer opportunities, current job openings, and various other topics.
Slippery Rock Borough council members and other important people like the borough manager, code enforcement officer, and the mayor gather together on the first and third Tuesday of every month.
The first meeting of the month is the "workshop" meeting. During these workshop meetings, the council gives essential updates on issues they spoke about at their last meeting. The vital role of workshop meetings is discussing what will become "new business" at the next meeting. Council members will vote on whether or not they will push information to a formal evaluation and vote at the agenda meeting next time they meet.
The third meeting of the month, the council agenda meetings, are more formal than workshops. Not only is the council in attendance at the meeting, but also a handful of outside entities and the borough's solicitor, who gives the borough legal advice.
During the agenda meetings, the council will approve or deny any "new business" from the workshop meeting. The council is briefed on reports from local outside entities like SRU, the fire department, the community library, municipal authority, and Slippery Rock Student Government Association.
Slippery Rock Borough Council meetings take place in the Borough Building and is shared with the borough's police department. Located at 306 E. Water St. two doors are in the rear of the building; you will use the right door to find the meeting.
Meetings start promptly at 7 p.m.
Upon entering the meeting, you may want to grab an agenda at the back of the room.
If you wish to speak at the meeting, look at the agenda to see if your talking point is also an agenda item. There will be two sign-up sheets, one for agenda items and one for non-agenda items. You will have to sign up prior to the start of the meeting in order to speak.
After grabbing your agenda, take a seat, silence your phone, and get to know the people who run the town you live in!
