Funding The Local Library

Layla Joseph

The Slippery Rock Community Library is located on North Main Street in Slippery Rock. When established in 2005, the community library was located in the basement of the Slippery Rock Borough building. Since then, the library has grown to keep up with community demand.

The local library hosts a variety of programs and activities for community members of all ages. With the proper identification, Butler County residents can gain access to a library card for free; allowing community members access to borrow unto 25 items across nine libraries in the county associated with the Butler County Federated Library System.

Programs by the library range from Veterans Career Counseling sessions twice a month, Senior Socials, Dungeons and Dragons sessions, and educational programs for the communities youth.

Public libraries help underserved members of the community gain access to essential resources and knowledge that might not be available otherwise. Unfortunately, though, the Slippery Rock Community Library does not have access to state-aided funds since it's recognizes as an "independent library within the Federal System" According to the Butler Eagle, published July 2022, with the exception of 25% of the budget, that is donated by stable community entities, the library's $100,000 budget is mostly collected by donations and fundraising.

To find out ways you can help fund the Slippery Rock Community Library, donation information can be found here. Fundraisers are happening frequently and can be found on the library's Facebook page.
